Sun shines on UnitedHealthcare/BFC 5K event
Rainy skies overnight cleared up to bright sun with a good breeze -- perfect weather for running and walking. The UnitedHealthcare Bishop's 5K (3.1 miles) for Kids took place in West Hartford this morning. First place overall and first place for male runners went to Shaun Leska, 25, with a time of 17:49, a 5:44 pace. First (and second) place for female runners went to 13-year old sisters: Sara Beland, 21:17 (6:51 pace) and Katie Beland, 21:22 (6:53 pace). In the photo at right: Runner listed as the "Ghost of John Kelley," age 16, is about to cross the finish. He came in 2nd place overall with a time of 18:30. The wire will electronically record his time, thanks to electronic "chips" tied to shoes that the runners wore.
The Rev. Tom White was the first priest across the finish, with a time of 22:44; the first clergywoman to finish was the Rev. Chris Craun, at 27:33. There's no award category for clergy spouse, but in case you're interested, it was Allen Downs, husband of the Rev. Donna Downs (St. Paul's, Norwalk) with a finish time of 21:09.
Parish teams (from two to over 20 members) ran and walked. Seabury Retirement Community sent a team and took home a few of the over 80 age-group awards. UnitedHealthcare fielded a team, too. A dozen or so dogs joined the walkers. Kids in grades 3-5 had their own 1-mile race while children from K -2nd grade had a 1/2 mile race. The Bishop's Fund for Children and Camp Washington both hosted information tables with publicity material. Full race results now online.
All funds raised from UnitedHealthcare/Bishop's 5K for Kids support programs across Connecticut that help kids at risk. |

Learn more about Lambeth Conference
Basic info:
- Connecticut's three bishops will be at this summer's Lambeth Conference, July 16 - August 3.
- A parallel conference for spouses will also be held.
- As part of a pre-Conference hospitality initiative, bishops and spouses have also been invited to a host diocese in England, Scotland or Wales from July 10-15. Our group will be guests of Bishop Robert Gillies and the Diocese of Aberdeen & Orkney.
- This year's Lambeth Conference is not designed to be legislative, but to focus on building relationships and Anglican identity -- "equipping bishops for mission."
Learn more:
- Official website for the Lambeth and Spouses Conferences.
- Media briefing, webcast, 2 p.m. next Tuesday May 20. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and Lambeth design team member the Rev. Dr. Ian Douglas. Follow a link from the Episcopal Church homepage.
- Bulletin inserts: Nine-week series begins on May 25.
- Episcopal Life Online has just released its first article about Lambeth, written by its London-based correspondent.
- Some conservative Anglican bishops will boycott Lambeth and instead attend a separately organized "GAFCON" conference that will take place in June in Jordan, with a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Read more.

In the news ...
Voices, of Woodbury, reported on the AmeriCares HomeFront renovation project of its faith communities including St. Paul's, Woodbury. The team worked on a house in Oakville. The Stamford Advocate covered a story about a snag in building plans at a site owned by St. Andrew's, Stamford. The article goes into some history. The current priest-in-charge at St. Andrew's sent me an email earlier this week saying the info about the "snag" in the article isn't correct. Newsday.com has published the Connecticut Post feature article about the students who are working to identify human remains dug up in a part in Fairfield, and which will be re-buried at Trinity, Southport. Since the last eNews May 9, there have been two more articles on Bishop Seabury Church, Groton, by the Associated Press and the Hartford Courant, with the AP article also posted on WTIC. The articles are about a lawsuit filed by the Diocese.

Not in the list above and you got great coverage?? Unfair!! Chances are the article wasn't put online, or my online alerts missed it. When one rejoices we all rejoice, so send me a SHORT email telling me WHAT was covered in WHICH paper, WHEN and give me a sense of the HOW MUCH coverage, WHERE in the paper (if relevant) and whether photos/art was included. If there's a link, forward it, to be sure I have it. Thanks from the editor. |
