Congratulations to all the runners and walkers, thank you to all the sponsors, and yay for the kids who will benefit from the 2007 Bishop's 5K for Kids run/walk and kids' field day events. Final financial figures aren't yet available, but all the proceeds will benefit programs around the state that serve children and youth at risk.
The weather was cool and occasionally misty on the 19th, but it didn't rain and it wasn't freezing cold. Organizers set up a tent on the front lawn of the school, which was popular. Perhaps due to weather some of those who'd pre-registered (about 300) didn't come, but another 90 or so registered on race day. Times were recorded for 331 people.
Local phenom Meredith Remigino not only won top female but won the top spot overall with a time of 19:13, a pace of 6:12. She and Mike Hart, both of West Hartford, stayed close the whole race. Hart led by several feet for most of it but Remigino pulled ahead at the finish to win by one second. Meredith Remigino (who's also a Yale grad and a lawyer) has run this race for four years now, since it moved from the MDC Reservoir to Webster Hill Elementary school, and she's been cutting her times from 20:22 to 19:13 this year. The day was a family event as well; as she raced her husband Michael stayed with their two sons, Matthew and Tyler, so the boys could run the in the Kids' Field Events.
Matthew Remigino took first place in the half-mile race for boys in K-2nd grade; Michaela Boyl took first place in the half-mile race for girls in that age group. In the one mile race, for kids in 3rd through 5th grades, Grace Moncousa took first place among the girls and Sam Newton took first place among the boys.
The top five places all went to West Hartford residents. In addition to the two above, TJ Jones of West Hartford was third at 19:23; Ted Newton of St. James's, West Hartford came in fourth at 19:27; and Shaun Leska of West Hartford was fifth at 19:28. Moving beyond West Hartford, Luke Belval of Christ Church Cathedral was sixth at 19:30 and Allen Downs (spouse of the Rev. Donna Downs) came in eighth overall at 20:55 (that's a 6:44 pace ... and he's over 50) and first in his age group.
Jim Wheeler was first clergy (male) across the line at 22:37 at a pace of 7:17; Tom White second at 22:54 and Don Richey third at 25:33. Among female clergy, Chris Craun was first across the line at 28:15; Audrey Scanlon second at 28:56 (with son William Scanlan at 28:57) and Donna Downs third at 30:14. Donna said it was her first race in nine years. Bishop Andrew Smith was the only bishop to run, he finished in 33:16.
Bill Odendahl and Robert Kelley were in the team from our title sponsor, United Healthcare. Odendahl finished at 21:59; Kelley's time was 26:12.
Charlie Yescott and Bob Marum, from the 60-69 age group, have run the race all six years; this year their times were 22:33 and 24:46, respectively.
August Brus, at 84, was the oldest entrant. He walked with a group from Seabury Lifecare Community in Bloomfield (which was another sponsor).
Team trophies went to St. James', Glastonbury, for the fastest co-ed team; to Trinity, Hartford, for the fastest female team; and to Christ Church Cathedral for the fastest male team. No word yet on which parish will get the Big Trophy in appreciation of its top fundraising.
